Wind energy is of high importance to us all because it helps to protect the environment and create a better quality of life worldwide. Wind farms are environmentally friendly. In contrary to other plants, they do not produce greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, or other by-products that poison the environment and all life nearby. Wind is a fully renewable energy source that will not run out like other sources, such as oil and coal.

Electrical energy production from the wind has grown rapidly in the past few years. About 9.3 GW of new wind energy capacity was installed in 2010 in the EU (source: EWEA). By end of 2010, total installed wind power in the EU reached about 84 GW, compared to around 197 GW of wind power capacity installed worldwide (source: GWEC).

Within the EU countries, Poland is one of the fastest growing younger wind markets. In 2010 newly installed wind energy capacity was about 380 MW, which brought the total installed capacity in wind energy to more than 1100 MW (source: EWEA).

Poland has large wind energy resources, onshore and offshore. Among other renewable energy resources in Poland, wind power offers Poland a great opportunity of combining economic, environmental and social benefits. Long-term, wind energy (onshore and offshore) will be a key energy sector in Poland to establish an environmentally friendly energy mix and a true sustainable alternative within the context of achieving national goals regarding energy efficiency, emissions reductions and increase in use of renewable energies.
